Anyone looking for a vacation away from the crowds, surrounded by splendid but rugged scenery, and filled with exciting wildlife encounters should consider a trip to the Antarctic peninsula. The trip we took in November 2011 also included stops in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia Island, which I highly recommend.

The highlight of Antarctica was the ice. Glacial fjords blanketed us in eerie serenity. Ice bergs as large as shopping malls broke the flat seascape. Smaller, eye-popping blue bergs dazzled with their delicately sculpted forms. Various species of penguins populated the beaches, and we had several whale sightings. The best wildlife encounters, though, were in South Georgia, where we walked among hundreds of thousands of penguins, including down covered 8-month old king penguin chicks. Throughout the trip we saw seven different species of penguins, but that wasn’t all. Fur seals and enormous bull elephant seals also sprawled and played on many of South Georgia’s beaches. While deliberately reaching out to or touching the wildlife is forbidden, it isn’t at all uncommon to have a curious penguin or young elephant seal approach a tourist and nip at his boots or bump his leg. Just remember not to touch the animal back and to watch out for the older animals who mean more serious business.

While planning our trip, we were naturally concerned about icy cold temperatures. Overall, we had beautiful sunny days with temperatures in the 30s or low 40s, but we did have a couple of days with snow, drizzle, and biting winds. Of course, we felt the cold; however, the stunning beauty and life of our surroundings overwhelmed our senses and warmed us with a sense of wonder such as we had never before felt.

Pat Fulton's blog about the "Maurer Family Cruise" booked through Departures Travel

LET’S GET TOGETHER; our family members from coast to coast had been saying that for years.

We checked into renting a large house then we thought of the menu planning, food preparation, cleaning up, entertainment, whoa, wait a minute, we’d have to hire a cook, a waiter, and a maid, who could afford that?

Then an idea clicked, A CRUISE! Not only would we be waited on, everyone would have their choice of meals, entertainment and with port stops in 2 countries, we had endless opportunities to build new family memories and all at half the cost.

Uncles George & Dick and cousins from California, Arizona, Kansas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey & Florida all met in Tampa for a 5 day cruise on the Carnival Destiny. Several other cousins unable to go on the cruise met us in Tampa for a Bon Voyage Caribbean dinner held at Sue’s house. We had a Maurer Family Reunion both on land and sea.

Uncle George at 88 bought a new bathing suit and jumped into a swimming pool to make sure he remembered how to swim. He wanted to swim with the dolphins in Cozumel. Amazing, amazing was all he was able to say as he interacted with the dolphins.

Dinner at night gave everyone a chance to catch up on family news and reminisce. We’re still laughing about Bob turning on the windshield wipers on the rental car in Grand Cayman every time he wanted to make a turn. There was no rain; the knobs in the car were just in different places. He was our hero volunteering to drive on the wrong side of the road to take us on a tour around the island. Rog had no problems driving the second car he just had to follow Bob. We stopped in Hell, went to the beach and put our feet in the water.

There was a bingo winner, slot machine winners, great shopping, fun and laughter we had it all!

This was one Family Reunion we will remember for years to come.

Bill and Lynette Everson's blog about their Norway cruise booked through Departures Travel...

In May 2009 we toured the coast of Norway. Several cruise lines offer trips; we opted for a large local ferry line because it allowed us to get at least a glimpse of many different ports while still providing us a comfortable—if not luxurious—cabin. Dining was also nice, though dinner was set with no options other than for pre-arranged dietary restrictions.

We enjoyed the best of Norway’s history, ancient and modern. Tidy colorful villages dotted the shore, but modern bridges connected islands to each other and the mainland. Trondheim was our favorite large port, and Nidaros Cathedral was a pleasant walk from the dock. Hundreds of fascinating sculptures adorn the exterior of the magnificent cathedral. A few days later we took a bus excursion through reindeer country and sat in a primitive Sami tent, sampled reindeer broth, admired Sami crafts, and welcomed the warmth of a roaring fire while an icy wind howled outside. Every port, even those we couldn’t explore due to time constraints, offered a captivating view of local life and geography. Townspeople in the village of Oksfjord serenaded us with a small brass band concert. They made us feel right at home with tunes like “King of the Road” and “Sweet Sixteen” even though they knew we didn’t have time to disembark and aid their economy.

Since we were interested in the coastline and fjords, we selected a round trip ferry cruise rather than flying or taking a train back south from the Russian border. However, we did begin our journey with a scenic train and ferry ride from Oslo to Bergen. If you visit Norway, don’t miss this awe inspiring trip through lovely pastures, over rugged mountains, and past rushing waterfalls. It truly set the stage for our memorable voyage.

Nancy and Bill Basile's blog about their Transatlantic Cruise booked through Departures Travel...

We have had first class service and “attention to details” from Departures Travel for the past 18 cruises and love the Princess ships, as well as Disney’s Magic. One of the more unusual cruises we have taken was a transatlantic trip. We flew into London for a couple days of sightseeing and then traveled to South Hampton where we embarked on the Crown Princess. The itinerary included Norway, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, and Nova Scotia. We disembarked in New York. Pat Fulton, owner of Departures, accompanied several other guests as well. She put together a very unique day tour for us in Rekjkvak, Iceland. We enjoyed stops at one of the most beautiful falls in Iceland, Strokkur Geyser which spouts at regular intervals, the Viking Museum, the famous Blue Lagoon and our driver even stopped for us to get up close and personal to the Icelandic horses! It was one of the best tours we had taken in a long time.

Nuuk, Greenland was a wonderful experience as well. Even the school children met the tenders at the dock to sing for us, as it was usual for them to do. Greenlandic folks are very friendly and many of them spoke excellent English. My husband went whale watching in Nuuk as well and had the thrill of his life to see all the whales! We enjoy the days at sea and crossing the Arctic Circle was another privilege as well. We saw many floating icebergs. This cruise only happens in September I believe, but we highly recommend it, if you are looking for cooler weather!

If you’re looking for a fun vacation to an unusual and unspoiled destination, consider visiting the Galapagos National Park of Ecuador.

My husband and I toured the islands with Lindblad Expeditions aboard the National Geographic Endeavour in May of 2010. Our days were filled with hikes, zodiac rides, and snorkeling. Guides, who were as personable as they were knowledgeable, introduced us to the unique wildlife of the islands. Blue-footed boobies performed their courtship rituals as we stood within two feet of them. Marine iguanas, lying on top of each other in great piles on the rocky shoreline, didn’t budge when we sat down next to them. Sea lions merely blinked as we side-stepped them on the beaches, and they somersaulted right in front of our noses as we snorkeled. Our only disappointment was not seeing a large number of Galapagos tortoises. While we saw a few in a forest and many at the Charles Darwin Research Center, most of the prickly pear-eating tortoise population seen on television programs lives on an island that is not open to the public. Still, we wouldn’t trade our time in the Galapagos Islands. It was a rare opportunity to enjoy nature in intimate surroundings.
